What Is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry uses carefully monitored medication to help children feel relaxed and comfortable during dental treatment. It’s often recommended for children who:

  • Have dental anxiety
  • Need extensive or complex dental care
  • Have special health care needs

Why Might My Child Need Sedation?

Even with gentle care, some children need extra support during dental visits. Sedation can help when:

  • Complex or extensive dental treatment is needed
  • Anxiety or fear makes procedures difficult
  • Your child has special health care needs or has had trouble completing care in the past

Sedation allows your child to receive important dental treatment safely in one stress-free visit. It is endorsed by the American Dental Association (ADA) and follows strict American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) safety guidelines.

Types of Sedation We Offer

  1. Inhaled Sedation (Laughing Gas)
A mild sedative mixed with oxygen that helps children relax while staying awake and responsive. The effects wear off quickly after treatment.
  2. General Anesthesia (GA)
For children with higher anxiety levels, special health needs, or extensive treatment needs, general anesthesia allows them to sleep comfortably while our licensed anesthesiologists and pediatric dental team complete care safely.

Sedation FAQs

Our licensed pediatric dental and anesthesia teams are highly trained and follow national safety standards. General anesthesia care is administered by a board-certified anesthesiologist, alongside a Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certified team and our trained dental providers following American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) standards.

Your child will be carefully monitored at every step.

Most children recover quickly. Your dental team will provide specific post-visit care instructions to help your child rest and return to normal activities.

Most sedation visits last 1–1.5 hours, with 20–40 minutes of sedation time.
